USA Election 2016 (Trigger Warning?)

What damage are you talking about... since I do not live in the US, I don't know.

Well, a lot of his policies are hit-n-miss, they help/hurt majorities of people, so depending on which side of the fence you live is how you'll feel about him. I don't think he did a bad job, by any human means, he got us out of Iraq finally, a dead Bin Ladin, health care is "available and mandatory", all those things actually got done. (Bush didn't get shit done. Also ruined gas prices. Obama fixed gas prices?) However, more welfare and so forth went on these last 8 years than ever before, The Affordable Health Care act wasn't/isn't stable yet, the USA's debt is now $19.4 trillion. That last point seems pretty important to me, I wish the next president would focus on that shit....ASAP.

I do not think Hillary would be a bad president. Even if she is not very t(h)rustworthy (sorry, I had to make that joke), she won't have bad intentions to the US. Yeah, the US debt is pretty high in absolute sence but compared to their GDP it's... well still high but not as high as you would think. Other countries like Spain and Italy are in real trouble... there is a way out for the US. Since people do not like to pay taxes (and if you ask me they are rediculously low in the US), how would you want a way out of there? No one is going to vote for a president that raises taxes....exporting knowledge is another way of getting some bucks back but there are just to many stupid people around (that is just the way it is in every country).

As an ex-Soldier, That excuse of a President we had has weakened our active military, made a mockery of how we're viewed by the world, and has done nothing to improve our situation here at home....why would he care? He's on his way out and even made sure his paycheck doesn't get effected when he leaves?! Seriously??? THAT'S what he was the most worried about?? Priorities....you're Doin them Wrong!!! lol. Good Riddance....Oh, and now that he's on the way out there's now things being done to not only to finally increase our solidiers pay but Disability too...Hmmmm...curious =3 Clinton had his perks with the economy (maybe he can help his wife get it back?), Flakey Bush was great comedy material But kept the Arab nations on their toes, Obama will not be missed...This Holiday Season is going to be colorful...Hang on kids...it's gonna be a Bumpy ride! weakened our active military
As a former soldier I hate how we view our military. I wish we would just leave the world alone. People always thank me for serving but I hate it. I joined cause I had nothing else going on in my life. All I did was sit around in a desert "looking" for terrorists when they could be anyone on the street. No matter how many we stopped there always were 2 more in their place. It was fruitless.

Then we said we "won" when in reality nothing came of it. Afghanistan and Iraq were still the same when I left as when I came in. Many times I came across people who didn't even know why we were there. "Americans? Why are they here?" And went about their farming. Many a times a farmer fired upon us, not because he was taliban but because the taliban scared him into shooting Americans or they will kill him and his family.

We fired at mountains most of the time. Into the dirt. Not knowing who was firing. Just as quick as it started, it ended. The firing stopped and we were left confused. Some people were thankful of us Americans being there liberating them from the local tribes who terrorized them, others hated us for the mutual destruction war caused. People are gonna die in war. Especially in a guerrilla war. Most of the dead will be civilians.

After all was done. After we "killed" Bin Laden to which I haven't seen any proof nothing fucking came from it. As I left. As I trained the locals how to fight the tribes, some of the locals were taliban themselves, at the first sign of conflict they dropped their weapons and went back into hiding.

It was just as violent when I came in as when I left... fuck these politicians, all of them.

That was his intent all along, and look at all the crap he's pulling now that he's been caught with trying to go away and sign off presidential rights as a just incase trump gets in, then goes and illegally gives away our internet to the UN so they can pass corporate special interest activities without going through our congress first.

Lol, Obama was more than a mistake, he was a socialist plant to degenerate america put there in a time when it was just societally PC "to vote for a black man". Anyone that's done even a modicum of research on him shows a good number of his studies and background are in socialism/studies of marxism, Obama's own autobiography mentions this.

Back when it was easier to decipher Friend from Foe...Had originally joined the military out of patriotism to prepare for the Communist threat (Cold War or WW3?) Then towards the end of mews service, tyrannical rulers (Gulf War then N Korea Ballistic defense). Pretty cut and dry objectives. Ended up losing the left side of mews capable body and EVERY Dream she ever grew up working for! Is she Angry? Hell Yeah! But she's NEVER regretted serving! ...Now a days these poor kids are joining to 'fight terrorists' thinking its gonna be like the movies or video games, but end up doing like you did. Repeating the same mistakes made by Politicians during the Vietnam era. People back in a boardroom decide They wanna thrust you into an environment where you can't decipher Terrorist from farmer. We squandered so much patriotism, money, and passion (good ppl like you) over bad intelligence and no End-game from the President. Now that we have this shadow of a Dragon and a Bear looming overseas...Who's gonna answer the call when we REALLY need them when things get Hot? Sorry you feel vexed for your service and sacrifices Scoobs, Don't blame that right shoulder patch you earned...blame the spineless ppl that passionately complain about this country and do NOTHING to help.

Repeating the same mistakes made by Politicians during the Vietnam era
Unfortunately this is a brilliant strategy. There's no clear enemy. No clear enemy means no clear end to the war. The US could've sat in Afghanistan for another 20 years claiming to be stopping terrorists. There is an alternative motive behind what we're doing in these countries.

You think we would've learned from Vietnam that a war against guerrillas is a war that cannot be won. The US tried this Afghan plan before with Vietnam but they made a huge mistake. They drafted soldiers, the war was aired on TV, and it was during a time of massive change, civil rights etc. People we watching every moment of the Vietnam war, young people were protesting on every block and black people were fighting a war for equality. There was too much pressure for the war to continue.

Unfortunately my war was not aired. They perfected their plan. There was a justifiable reason to go to war after 911. As the battle raged on there were too many distractions to let the public know what we're doing is a huge mistake. We sat there for over a decade shooting at mountains, fearing that the next car that pulls up will blow up in our face. Now comes ISIS. A product of our wrong doing. Scaring the daylight out of Europe, forcing them to take up arms. The same plan that was laid down for the US. Hopefully they don't make the same mistake.

Trump or Hilary? It doesn't matter who you vote for. They both have the same agenda. Increase military spending. Not a damn word was said about education. We'll keep on fighting foreign wars. We'll keep on being stubborn about learning a second language. We'll never improve our educational system and keep on being the laughing stock of the world. It makes me wonder why all my PhD colleagues are imported from other countries. Because we have so little students here that have given a damn about education. We have the resources to motivate our kids but we don't use them.

My uncles fought in Vietnam. Who would've thought I'd end up moving to Vietnam and be dating a Vietnamese girl? Haha. Maybe one day, if Afghanistan cools down, my kid will move to Afghanistan and date an Afghani person.

I'm tempted to keep making dumb jokes, but I actually firmly believe civic participation is super important and, despite being the child of filthy immigrants, I tend to be a pretty patriotic person when it comes to 'murica. So, my fellow Americans:

1) I think people should give serious thought and concern to local elections. Whatever happens in the White House is, in terms of day-to-day life, nothing compared to what happens in city councils, state legislatures, governor's mansions and so on. I would hazard to say 90% of what happens in politics that affects *you* personally happens at the state level or lower.
2) One of the candidates in this election is targeting my hometown for stationing people at the polls, with one person explicitly saying that they would profile people of certain racial/ethnic backgrounds. No matter your political affiliation, no matter who you are voting for, no matter your race (or whatever), you have a right to vote. Do not let some goon take that away from you — it's illegal to interfere with the electoral process. There are usually phone numbers to call to report unsavoury elements being present at the polls.
3) There is basically no excuse for not voting. (Sorry, Scoob.) I will be flying to Boston on election day. Where I live, you can absentee vote from your couch pretty much, via mail. They don't care one bit if you'll really be out of state on election day or not. Your vote will be counted all the same. Most other states have similar provisions in place. And hey, if you hate both major candidates, vote for a third party, or write-in Principal Tyrell. Just don't forget that the presidential election isn't the only ballgame next week. Planning on moving to Canada (haha) after this election anyways? Don't forget about your family and friends who probably won't all follow you. We're in this together.
4) Whoever wins, things will be fine. Really. We have had some seriously awful presidents in our history and lived through some ridiculously crazy times. I still believe what happens in local elections is far more important, but in either case, things will be okay. Really. They might not be great, you might have to spend 4-8 years griping like Democrats did during Bush or Republicans have done during Obama, but we are still here.

I've been fascinated with politics ever since the Yitzhak Rabin assassination when I was a little kid. I already voted for Clinton on Sunday with my girl and we're throwing an election watch party on Tuesday with some friends and her family that's flying in tomorrow to visit.

Trump and the GOP's only redeeming quality to me is that they support my home country of Israel, but other than that I sided with Clinton.

I'm conflicted about making the vote "mandatory". If the whole system had 4 years to ready people up for an informed decision, sure. As it currently stands, we would just have millions more clueless sheeple voting on candidates they simply "like." Personally, I'm not voting this year either, although I'd throw my vote for Trump...I don't want to spend paragraphs getting off topic, but some things Hilary supports (BLMs, 3rd wave Feminism, Welfare+) simply put me into a triggered mess.

For the record, I voted Obama...Sooo...

never realised how inferior British politics were compared to the USAs and in a way that makes me happy

:( Checks and balances was put into place for a reason. So that no one branch has too much power. Although if you really look at it the legislative branch is the most powerful since they can override a president veto. Have the judicial work in tangent with legislative and it won't matter who's president.

There will ALWAYS be corruption in a system. Perhaps the president isn't the problem. Maybe it's some of the people who work behind him.

Excuse my Scooby Dooby pessimism but there is too much going on behind the scenes to imagine your vote will do anything to change the true motives. The wars I fought in made me realize that they didn't throw me in Afghanistan and Iraq for my country but for something else...

When your country has the power to change entire nations. Politics becomes of massive importance. Not only to Americans but to all of the world.

true but you never know! the UK could come back as a major power if we conquered the second British empire

I definitely do not think voting should be made mandatory — the examples of countries where voting is mandatory (e.g. Australia, Chile?, etc.) do not exactly inspire confidence. Better education at all levels about civics/politics would be nice. The state of education in that realm is not that great at the moment, and hasn't been for some time. Making voting easier would be nice too. I have worked with people in the past who had no way of travelling to the polls because doing so would come at the expense of meals for a day (or worse), and that makes my blood boil.

Scoob, I definitely understand your pessimism. One of my best friends is a vet of both wars himself and has jaded, cynical outlook, similar to yours. He doesn't abandon the system, though: he works to change it. His pet cause is VA reform, since that shit is depressingly broken. I guess my point is, one can believe, as you do, that the game is broken, and still try to make things better. But I'm biased and generally opposed to fatalistic outlooks on most things.

Even if the presidential election is basically a big reality TV show — like I said, it's not the only ballgame. Depending on where you live, mayor, city council and other local officials are really important. State legislatures across the country wield tremendous power, and many of them are broken in their own ways too. We are lucky to live in a time and place when we can even participate in a democratic process at all, however broken it may be. Need to make the best of it while we have it.

"It's not rigged, you're just a tinfoil hat!" Friend just showed me this, sickening. Regardless of who wins you deserve whats coming to you if you vote for this monster.

hen goes and illegally gives away our internet to the UN
w00t, what am I reading here? The internet is for the whole world, it is called the world wide web for a reason, not the US wide web. Maybe you mean something else or what am I missing here!?

Lol, Obama was more than a mistake, he was a socialist plant to degenerate america put there in a time when it was just societally PC "to vote for a black man". Anyone that's done even a modicum of research on him shows a good number of his studies and background are in socialism/studies of marxism, Obama's own autobiography mentions this.

He is not a socialist whatsoever, even if he studied it. It does not give any relevant information whatsoever, it only stand that you are 'against Obama' without an apparent argument. He might come to the conclusion, after studying it, that Marxism is a bad thing. You never mentioned how he "degenerated america"? Compared to Europe, the US (Obama included) is pretty right winged, even though he might be left in comparison to your point of view. We're doing fine here in Europe by the way.

Last, but not least, I am shocked to see how veterans look at the wars they have fought. I can (or probably can't) only imagine how it must be like to be sent into the dark without knowing who the enemy actually is, with the wrong/foggy intelligence as well. Losing friends, PTSD possible, and the list goes on. This is not something I would wish my worst enemy, let alone 'acquaintances' or friends with whom I play PSO with. I am by no means someone who would go to war voluntarily but whatever you guys have been through, my respect is enormous and that is something you should know. I wish you all but well, whatever president you guys will choose!
