Hey all! Joined this server about two days ago on a whim with a couple buddies of mine, and I've been absolutely addicted ever since. I owned a Dreamcast back in the day and played PSOv1 offline when I was little, but I only ever beat Normal mode and never made it much farther than that due to my dad not letting me use the Dreamcast's online for anything other than Quake or Unreal (don't ask me how that makes sense). As a result, playing a modified V2 version of episode 1 and (soon) diving into Episode 2 & 4 is going to be quite a daunting task, but so far the community has been nothing short of helpful and friendly, and I greatly appreciate that. I do have some general questions though:

1. When is a good time to start Hard difficulty?

2. Is it worth going through the story mode missions with the Principal?

3. Am I the only one that sees the appeal of playing with the Classic loot system and just communicating and organizing who gets what drops as a team/community?

4. As for Classic loot, since Section IDs are a thing, what determines which loot table is used on item drops? Is the person that deals a killing blow to monsters or the person that breaks the boxes loot table used for drops, or is it some sort of "all tables in the party are used at once" kind of thing?

There are probably many more questions that I'll have coming up, and I'm trying my best to do most of the research myself, I certainly don't wanna be /that guy/.

But yeah, if you want, feel free to add me, I'm down to play with anyone and I'm spending a ton of time on the game so (hopefully) I can get to a decent enough gear and xp level to play with more people soon!

Hi, welcome to our community and de start of a great PSO career :). I am pretty staight forward as a person so I will dive into your questions right away.
1. Start with hard as soon as possible if you want to level quickly, that means lvl 20 (but is dependable on skill as well). However, if you are a more casual kind of player, just try to enjoy the game, there is no shame in being lvl 25-30 and still playing on normal difficulty, especially when it is your first character and your mag is low level as well. Don't try to solo too much since it is way more fun to play with others and it levels up your character way more quickly.
2. Yes and no. It is more for advanced players for specific hunts. I would not start it right away but read yourself into it if you have the chance.
3. You are probably not the only one but this servers strong point is PSO2 drops. As a person you have a lower drop chance but as a party it is higher.
4. The one that has created the game (/partyinfo will let you see the SID of that specific party). On Ephinea, even if you leave your game you Section ID stays active in that party and no other. It has nothing to do who has got the killing blow.

Hey buddy, nice to see new people. And new to the game completely too. It's nice to know pso still attracts new players after all these years. Nice chatting to you earlier about TP's and team flags. (Spooz if you couldn't Tell). Keep an eye out for mew, she's lovely and she will most certainly have fun looking after your hard mode games. By watching your every move. (she's literally an angel to you guys). Your avatar has been used in pso history by some of the best and I have been yet to see it here on ephinea, I don't even know what it is or who it is. But the picture brings back nostalgia from old pso buddies on Sega official BB.

1.) It totally depends on your gear, class level, mat usage. So no one other than you getting smacked by boomas can really determine this. I'd personally say with hard mode crack at it at lvl 20 even if you have to do some solo mode.

2. Yes for a 1st time player it is completely worth it for learning the game, general fun and getting a back story. (plus can hunt items/ unlock certain things by doing gov quests / solo story mode so this can benefit you later having them unlocked

3. There is no appeal. Because if you play pso2 the said item in question has a chance to drop 4 times (1 each person) from the same enemy. As well as your own loot everywhere. Gotta love meseta and selling stuff for meseta and not having someone high all the meseta. MESETA I LOVE YOU MESETA YES I DO. Meeeeeeeeeeeeesettttttaaaaaaa.

4. The section ID is set with who made the room and will be set to this ID no matter who joins or leaves. You can view this by typing /partyinfo

And ask away it's what newbies are meant to do while us oldies are naturally going to answer. Were here to do so. Have fun slaughtering and being smacked around. Have fun and the addiction will certainly not stop for a while. You might as well started cocaine cuz dude pso is the most addictive drug around. See you in game soon ;3

Its a character named Vyse from the Dreacmast RPG Skies of Arcadia. One of my personal favs

I appreciate the quick responses, my dudes!

One other general question that I forgot to ask, involved taking a character from episode 1-4. While Episode 1 isn't exactly exploding with content at first glance, its very clear that Ep.1 alone is going to keep me busy for quite some time. What are the tells that you're generally ready to take your character onto Ep.2 and then Ep.4? Would my level 100+ character that just conquered Ultimate on Ep.1 be able to jump into Ep.2 on higher difficulties? If it wasn't already obvious, transitioning from one phase of content to the next phase of content and knowing when to do so is the cause for most of my PSO anxiety right now. I don't want to jump to Ep.2 or 4 too late and have some OP character that breezes through content without enjoying it, but I don't want to jump in too early either and be underequipped

Ep2 is mostly considered the hardest because of the lack of space and skill is key as is some (hell/demon) equipment. Ep4 is generally 'easier' but the enemies are still a lot tougher than most of ep1. Some spawns of the most played quests need to be rememberized as well but in the beginning that is someone elses responsibility to take care of them those spawns. Just lift with some others, don't worry and play ;). What class do you play btw?

You: Hey all, I've been hunting a frozen shooter forever. Anyone want to do Tyrell's Ego with me?
Not-You: Ok, I will.

Quest starts. Rare bear appears! "Not-You has found a frozen shooter."

You: Hooray!
Not-You: "I'll sell it to you for 3pds" or silence.

PSO2 drops creates customers, not community.

Not to derail the topic, but I think you're mistaken. The players create customers, not the drops.

Whether it's PSO2 or Classic drops, you'd have had the same situation with that person. The Classic difference would have been only one chance to get the drop, whether or not you were standing over the bear when it died and whether or not you were the one who hit the pick up button faster or not. In Classic, had the person picked up the item at that time, you'd have been in the same situation. Makes no difference.

Play with me and you can have all items that aren't '40+ hit diska of braveman' and 'sealed j-sword'
^ _^
nobody joins my runs QwQ

Well the same thing ends up happening if you're playing with friends using PSO2 drops.
Most people never play with classic because PSO2 drops give you superior rates and everyone gets their own green/blue/yellow boxes along with rare drop rolls! Each player sees less drops (each player has 50%? chance to drop anything from a monster in a 4-player party) but the overall drop rate is higher.

We can agree that it is players who are at the root of the "problem" (construed by perspective, as it is). Yes, players create customers.

That said, the psychological differences between rushing to grab and to being delegated by code is significant. This is why the players, I think, are inclined to view things economically first.

Look, man, I'm all in favor of PSO2 drops. I'm just pointing out how an aspect of the system plays out in the realm of moral psychology. The shame, really, is to be worn by the selfish.

A lot of people are greedy, and you need to also know that the "non-you" MIGHT have their own ranger/alts who wanna use certain items too. Once you play long enough, you may find a few friends who you can trust to give and take from each other. I have just a few people who I can trust and lend stuff to and borrow from (e.g. im borrowing a Rambling May 40h and Prophet of Motav, and you'd need a lot of trust to do that), or trade items and trade back at a later date. You just shouldn't expect things from randoms/pubs or you might be disappointed

Sorry, I can't see your point.
How we perceive ourselves and our actions depends upon the circumstances and attitudes surrounding these actions. There is a stark difference in appearance between racing to grab something anyone could pick up vs keeping something that only you can pick up.

The straw-man's family grieves.

You're in the midst of making that one cool team though, Team socialism or whatever (I don't think it has a name yet). I'm sure you can find a few ppl there who would share their itens. :D

Again, I don't see your point. The only difference I see is the sense of urgency removed, more focus being placed on the combat, and things becoming more "fair" in the PSO2 drop mode. But, hey, we can agree to disagree.

I sort of see what he's getting at, honestly. I don't mind derailment when it involves game design discussion, can't get enough of that kinda thing.

I sort of look at the Classic vs PSO2 argument the same way. When drops are shared, you aren't as trigger happy when picking things up, and because you are trusting in 3 other companions to let you get drops that you want when they drop, it encourages you to be kinder. You don't look at items as some sort of ransom or trade bait (well at least not to as much of an extent) but rather you look at your teammates and consider "Well I mean if X thing dropped I'd want them to let me have it so sure, I'll let him snag it now" which then makes them want to return the favor. It becomes more of a selfless experience because you are all at the mercy of the same RNG and it makes you all appreciate each other and the drops themselves more. Of course you can still snag things quick and sell them for profit in some kind of black market way, but it isn't some immediate option.

At least, that's how I feel about it conceptually

My whole thought process is that a PSO Classic style drop system would work better in a game with heavier crafting or a game that's designed more around a player driven economy. However... PSO isn't a crafting based game where drops are crafting items nor is it a game with a player driven economy... So PSO2 drops it is!
