How does Death Penalty work in the official servers for PSOBB?

Greetings.

Long time ago I’ve asked one of the staff members a simple question:

“How does Death Penalty work in the official servers for PSOBB?”

After days, months, and years … I didn’t get a response.

I realize now that maybe I should add additional questions.

So, I’m asking these questions here publicly.

Also I guess this can be another wiki page talking about legacy features similar to the DMC page.

From referring to this thread, here are my questions:

(Let’s ignore the Mag's Synchro minus 5 percent.)

Activation:
From this post, the penalty activate right at zero HP, correct?
Is it really split into two? (HP zero and teleport to medical?)
Does it begin once you are level 20?

Exp loss and cap limit:
How much do you lose? What was the original percentage?
Is the max amount of EXP loss limit 100K per death? (Link)
I understand you cannot de-level, but is it possible to go backwards for the needed EXP to the next level? (Example: 3105 is needed to level up to 21 but after dying too many times, it’ll be like, 4037-or-whatnot?)

---

I’m only interested how it works. This is not a feedback/suggestion post.

Thank you.

Just a heads up, but the details of this aren't in the client so we can't know exactly. And it's not like the drop system where the details could be reverse engineered from previous versions of the game (like V3).

The only sources for how BB's exp penalty worked are...
  1. ancient news posts, probably available on the wayback machine somewhere.
  2. random youtube/nicovideo vids that *might* verify some information if the player recorded a run where they died, and if the quality is high enough to show the EXP values before and after, assuming they opened the menu enough times.
  3. self-proclaimed "VANILLA PSOBB EXPERTS" who may not know the basics of the game.
  4. other players who played JP official, but memory is a funny thing, and you'll often find these players remember differently.
You lost your meseta not your xp
This thread is about official BB which did have an exp loss on death. V3 was the loss of meseta if you returned to Pioneer 2.

Schthack Blue Burst has these original Sega server features in place in current day.

They expressed that the EXP loss on death was a clean 30%, which is currently what they have now to the best of my knowledge. There's no currently known explanation behind the 30% loss outside of what Nol Rinale expressed at the time to be the actual official number so take that with a grain of salt (mostly because she's not credible).

Blue Burst official did not make you lose Meseta on death as that was part of the reworks for the initial Blue Burst release.
Ephinea doesn't have EXP loss on death so the point is kind of moot anyways. Hope this little insight helps.

It isn't known. It probably never will be unless Sega gets hacked.

But BB needs a real death penalty. Mag penalty is a meme!

What was determined:
- You can't lose a level
- You can't lose more EXP than the level originally requires (no "EXP Debt")
- EXP loss didn't start until a certain level (iirc that was 20)
- EXP loss reduced when you were revived (Scape, Moon, Reverser)
- Amount lost came from total EXP, so you would still have a specific amount of EXP at each level (ties into can't lose more EXP than originally required)

It was more or less agreed that the amount loss was randomized to a degree, but from looking over old posts, it is impossible to deduce the actual amount (figures ranging from 8,000 EXP in Ult - which is like 15% of level 90, from 190,000 EXP from someone close to a level up at 158 which is close to 30%.)

I personally don't remember shit other than losing experience :lenny:

Not sure if the same thing used to apply online but I remember getting frustrated at DC/GC PSO offline for losing all equipped weapons and Meseta when I died then having to run all the way back to the spot to get them back!

You only lost weapons in Version 2, you just permanently lost whatever Meseta you had in your inventory at the time for Gamecube/XB

That sounds frustrating. I disliked the level penalty enough in final fantasy 11. I don't think I could handle pso having similar things with megid existing.

Just wanted to add, I remember the losing weapons thing too ProjectK, when I was a very young kid playing on my brothers character on Dreamcast, I would die and other players would steal the weapon I dropped so many times, he had to ban me from playing and let me make my own character :D

I played vanilla BB but it's been a long time. I believe you would lose 10% of whatever you had gained toward the next level. But it would reduce a bit if you died over and over. Leveling down was not possible.

(I do not know for sure.)

The worst possible scenario for this would be if you were Lv. 199 with 1 EXP to go until Lv. 200 and you died, you would lose approximately 480,000 EXP.

I don't think we need EXP loss, but I think we need to implement some mechanics that discourage people from dying over and over because it is annoying to deal with.

I would love to see some sort of a reward for not dying. Ie. your personal RDR goes up 1% for every 500k EXP deathless, capping at 5%, and resetting on death. This would decrease overuse of berserk, overuse of DF, and allow FOs to play in a more traditional manner without pressure.

Edit: Oh, it would also discourage people from killing their teammates when Falz has their soul. Ephinea is better than Schtserv in most ways, but one thing that absolutely BEWILDERS me on Ephinea is how comfortable everyone is with straight up killing their teammates during Falz's soul steal. Schtserv didn't have EXP loss either, but back then it was considered bad form to kill your teammate.

Edit 2: I read all the other posts, and there's huge variance in what people remember about EXP loss on vanilla BB. We all agree it existed, but wow... I guess we just don't know.

This is what I feared. Now I know.

Either way I want to thank everyone for contributing to this topic.
