Coren is the Wandering Tekker on Pioneer 2, currently located near the shops in all Episodes' Multi-Mode. You can give him either 1,000, 10,000, or 100,000 Meseta for a chance at a random item. The item you receive differs depending on the day you give him the meseta, and how much meseta you offer. Note that here is a high chance of a junk item.

All items obtained from Coren have no attributes and minimum stats.

Note that Coren uses UTC time (the time displayed if you type /time) to determine what day he is pulling from.

Note, if you pay 100k, you can also receive an item from the 10k and 1k list. If you pay 10k, you can also receive an item from the 1k list.

Your chances at getting an item from a lower cost tier when paying more are higher than if you spent the correct amount on that tier, so sometimes it can help to overpay if there's something you really want on a lower list.

I got a Mind Material in the 10k list when it's not in there for today.
This isn't a glitch, actually, it's just how it's coded right now.

When you don't get anything that's on the "special" list, you get a random "tool" item. That could include any material or even a Photon Drop.

We're still tweaking things and may or may not leave the common junk procedure as it is.

SO, ENJOY THAT MAT.

So

What about my Friday Cure/Paralysis off 1000 meseta

I mean, I'm not arguing. I've gotten two of them trying to get Tablets. I like Cure/Paralysis

Cure/Paralysis is in friday's table on the server. We've made some changes to the items so may need to update Matt's original post.

oops lol, it is Cure/Paralysis, I wrote Cure/Confuse there for some reason... that's an error on my part.

The list will be completely changing after maintenance tomorrow, among how Coren works in general.

Starting tomorrow, this will be the list used: http://ephinea.pioneer2.net/coren.txt

Also, after tomorrow, spending 100k will give you a chance to get an item from the 1k, 10k, and 100k list for that day.
Spending 10k will give you a chance to get an item from the 1k, and 10k list for that day.

If you spend 100k, your chances of getting an item from the 1k and 10k list are higher than if you had spent 10k to buy an item from the 10k list or spent 1k to buy an item from the 1k list.

The same goes if you spend 10k, your chances of getting an item from the 1k list are higher than if you had spent 1k on the 1k list.

Hopefully that makes sense, and the whole thing should actually make more sense with the new way he works.

You'll also see Photon Drops and Materials have been taken off the list. They'll still show up when you get "Junk" along with disks and such.

Edit: Oh, yeah, he'll be in Episode 2 and 4 also tomorrow.

Are the rates on the wiki still accurate? Or is Coren bugged or am I misinterpreting something?

By my math from the wiki, the rates are:
  • 1k pull (total 4% to get something)
    • 4% for 1k item
  • 10k pull (total 12% to get something)
    • 8% for 1k item
    • 4% for 10k item
  • 100k pull (total 24% to get something)
    • 12% for 1k item
    • 8% for 10k item
    • 4% for 100k item
Over the last 3 weeks, I've pulled about 55 times for 100k each, and gotten nothing. Assuming the above math is accurate, this comes out to about 0.000028% probability of occurring.

To be clear, I'm not upset if the rates are wrong, or if I'm just astonishingly unlucky. It just doesn't add up to me and I want to make sure I understand what to expect.

Coren works like so:

The ship makes an initial roll in which you have a 4% chance to succeed.

If you had bet 100,000, then after failing the initial roll:

The ship rolls again with a 6% chance to succeed for a 10,000 item.
If you fail the previous roll, the ship rolls one last time with a 8% chance to succeed for a 1,000 item.

If you had bet 10,000, then after failing the initial roll:

The ship rolls again with a 6% chance for a 1,000 item.

If all rolls failed, you'll get a common item.

So then I am super unlucky (1/27k) and the wiki is wrong about off-tier rates.

  • 4% success on the initial roll matches the wiki. This results in 2 scenarios:
    • 4% chance of success: end result: 100k item
    • 96% chance of fail and continue to roll 2
  • 6% success on second roll does not match the wiki. 2 scenarios dependent on failing the first roll:
    • 6% chance of success * 96% fail roll 1 = 5.76% real chance of success: end result: 10k item
    • 94% chance of fail * 96% fail roll 1 = 90.24% of gambles fail and continue to roll 3
  • 8% success on third roll does not match the wiki. 2 scenarios dependent on failing the first and second rolls:
    • 8% chance of success * 96% fail roll 1 * 94% fail roll 2 = 7.22% real chance of success: end result: 1k item
    • 92% chance of fail * 96% fail roll 1 * 94% fail roll 2 = 83.02% chance of failing all rolls: end result: common item
To summarize:
  • 4% to receive a [roll tier] item
  • 5.76% to receive a [roll tier - 1] item (or common if tier = 1)
  • 7.2192% to receive a [roll tier - 2] item (or common if tier = 2)
  • 83.02% to receive a common
rate / # of items in category = drop rate of any item in category:
For example, cure/poison on Sunday should have a drop rate of 0.0722/8 = 0.009 = 1/110.8, a far cry from the wiki's rate of 1/66.7.

I'll go another weekend or 2 of spending before I complain about rates again, since this does make the odds slightly more feasible, but now I want to fix the wiki. Does everything I've listed seem correct? If so I might go adjust the rates in the wiki. :)

I haven't played much in the last few weeks while preparing for a move, but I'm pretty confident based off of the pulls I have done:

I don't think the secondary and tertiary rolls are being done when gambling on Coren. With a decent sample size, I cannot recall ever rolling an item from a lower tier. I have gotten 2 100k items from 100k rolls, failed my few 10k rolls, and pulled I believe 3 1k items from 1k rolls. Nothing ever from a lower tier than the active gamble.

I'll be starting a hardcore character in the coming months and I want to make sure I can actually get 10k items from 100k pulls (if I decide I am allowed to use Coren at all).
