Noobish questions from a poor soul (FOmar)

Greetings adventurers,
old nostalgic player here who started playing again, but aren't we all?

I'm playing FOmar now, currently level 149 Whitill and as I grind my way through the stages I have a few unanswered questions for anyone who could help me with answers

1) is melee FOmar better than pure nuke? So far I've been playing as a pure nuke character. It works pretty well but I'm totally neglecting FOmar capabilities. I only used Mind Materials so far, stacking up on power and others and I'm afraid I'd ruin my character using other types

2) if melee FOmar is worth building, what would be a good combination of weapons? Probably the best I've got so far, item wise, is Morning Prayer + Morning Glory. Another option I have is Thirteen + Diska of Lberator/Braveman.
I saw that Lame d'Argent into Excalibur is an excellent weapon but I also saw my ID has no chance whatsoever to obtain it... (hate this thing). Would one of the weapons coming from challenge mode be better?

3) speaking of challenge mode, how can I find people for it? I remember back in the day I picked double saber and mechguns, are they still the best options for my class?

4) I'm 2 photon drops away from 50. I was planning to invest them into a Magical Piece. Is that my best option?

5) I'm currently grinding all areas with no discrimination. Is there anything I should be hunting for with my Class/ID (FOmar/Whitill). I wanted to take my chances with Psycho Wand but as a Whitill it only can come from Del Lilies and I'm having a very hard time with Tower quests solo, not to mention 1/300.000 chances sounds depressing. I would also like to have a few word with whoever invented Ill Gills

That's pretty much everything for now. Thanks in advance to those who will spend a minute giving me replies

Hey there,
Will try to answer your questions in order below.

  1. FOmar has the benefit of flexibility for MST or ATP builds --- while leveling, people may find it easier to climb doing things such as E1/E4 and spamming techs. Once you get stronger items, ATP FOmar will start to shine and surpass MST for most quests. But I wouldn't jump into ATP until you at least have a mag ready for it.
    1. Additionally - Materials can be reset, would recommend following guides for your class to avoid unnecessary material waste.
  2. Sample items that can make it fun to play ATP/ATA-
    1. 495 - ATP: Thirteen + Diska of Braveman is a strong combo. It addresses one of his biggest issues, ATA, while giving enough potential ATP to enable combo kills. You will have more fun with this the closer you approach 800+ base ATP as it will begin to combo kill most E1 mobs when combined with Zalure 30 in single player. Pretty easy to find / buy with low-mid hit % to make your life easier.
    2. Other cheap items you can pick up to help:
      1. H/Battle - Don't even think of doing ATP build without this. V101 is not required to do well / can wait as extremely low priority.
      2. 570 ATP - Slicer of Fanatic. Good practice to use this against some mini bosses as you will find times where ATP / MST aren't good enough to clear quickly (ex. Girtabulu). Useful even on an MST build as you just want to land the special to reduce their HP by 3/4.
      3. Smartlink - Once you have Vulcans or Slicer, you need to this to stop getting penalties to ranged attacks.
      4. H/Arms - You need ATA to hit things, less relevant as you level.
      5. 50H Charge Vulcans - You need shockingly low amount of ATP to combo kill with these thanks to Shifta 30 covering up some of the ATP. The dream is having even higher hit ones to allow for more specials to land, but even heavy attacks here are strong. Can wait on this until about the time you are ready for the 800 ATP items to allow for a ranged mini-boss clear alternative.
    3. 800 ATP - Excalibur. Your character is okay at unsealing Lame D'Argent, but please don't try to unseal on Ultimate difficulty as it will probably just make you miserable from poor clear speed / not getting KOs while grouping. It is great for hitting multiple targets in a single swing along with massive base stats on a weapon.
    4. 820 ATP - Galatine. Even all 0'd, it's base ATA is so strong that it can really help you finish off problem enemies. The ATA advantage over Excal matters while leveling, but you will likely find Excal more generally useful once it has decent stats to hit multiple close targets (ex. Worm boss in E1).
    5. ES Weapons from challenge mode tend to be less impactful for FOmar due to his terrible max ATA. They can still find use with accuracy glitch ES Hell Slicers [w/ V502] / ES Demon Cards for example, but this should be pretty low in your priority list while leveling compared to if playing a high ATA class like RAmar. Outright skippable in most runs otherwise.
  3. Challenge mode has an entire thread in the main Ephinea discord, would recommend checking that out for groups.
  4. Magical Piece is a newbie trap for PDs.
    1. You can take those 50 PDs and see much more noticeable boosts to Tech damage getting a Gifoie and Rafoie merge for the character for 1/10th of the cost by using trade channels:
    2. The 30% boost of barriers is >>> 10% more damage than a Fire Scepter: Agni.
    3. Or those PDs could be used to just fund ATP side of things, like getting a Mag and some basic low hit% items for cheap.
  5. FOmar is fairly flexible in his roles, you should be able to play most areas just fine solo.
    1. Be aware PSO is meant to be played with multiple IDs, and at some point you will need to make a decision of "which quests do I find more fun to do as X" or being willing for other teammates to host for you as you gear up.
    2. Episode 1 - Can do either MST or ATP while leveling here, though ATP favored in multiplayer to finish off stragglers. Areas weak to Gifoie spam, like Mines, may end up favored here over time.
    3. Episode 2 - ATP / ATA only. Come back here at the end of the game as a FO (or any other class preferably). Be prepared to mostly just buff / support others here vs. help with clears while under geared. Ubers like psychowand should not be grinded out when just starting out, and even then there are much better alternatives on other IDs.
    4. Episode 4 - MST clear focused. Can do just fine on quests that allow Gifoie stacking (ex. multiple waves of Rappies, Lizards back to back). FOnewman tends to clear faster here since they get RA tech boosts and higher MST, but still fine to bring a FOmar here for some options.
Hope this answers your questions.

You beautiful soul gave me so much of the information I needed. Thanks for the time you took to reply in such a thorough way

The only thing I forgot to mention is that I already have a Gifoie Barrier on me and that's why I was asking about the Magical Piece to push those numbers as far as I could

As for magical piece, while I'm also pretty much on team 'big numbers give big dopamine' I'd wait. I know the anniversary event is getting a revamp, but I'd hold off on just buying one with PDs and just farm it at the event. It's how I got mine for free. They're gonna change how the event and it's currency works, but I doubt they're gonna remove the heart keys as that's one of the only other ways of getting one other than Paganini. Set that heart key on a wishlist and forget about it for now it's much easier to get a lame for unsealing during the boost quests with other people. Focus on getting the other items first and when August rears it's head, that's when you get that shiny piece of gear. In my experience, pso is not a speedrun to endgame. It's a slow grind with major gains made over time by having multiple IDs and too much time on your hands. Chill and have fun, that Pwand and MP will be there one day!

With such a long list of characters I can only assume you're right and my wish for a Magical Piece is somewhat wrong. That means my handful of PD's will be used to get something I need more than that. I will also consider you personally responsible for my lack of dopamine for the time being, but I'm sure you'll be fine regardless. And of course with that I mean, thank you for your help

No problem! I'd focus on getting a Thirteen+ Disks of Braveman with some hit. Trade chat in discord can really help out there. Even a 0/0/0/0 lame d'argent is still better than none and will only set you back a pd or so while hunting for a good one. Unsealing can be done quickly on normal ep2 by spamming gifoie in Cal's clock challenge found under extermination.
Funky things you can try as well are:
crimson coat with red saber
Girasole (also looks cool <3)

When in doubt you can always check the wiki as well

That's all very useful so thank you once again. I will also join the discord at once.
I do have another little question, if you may. I wish I could promise it's going to be my last...
I'm afraid of doing quests. As in, as far as I know completing a quest will lock it and I won't be able to repeat it. I only did the few quests I remember from Dreamcast times to unlock Montague's services. I also know that if you complete ALL quests then they will be all unlocked forever but can I do that or will I be blocked by some multiplayer quests I can't do on my own?

That only counts for the solo quests and side quests, from all the other categories its all free to spam to death and the unlocking of the side quests by doing them all is all a solo job. It goes per difficulty tho, so if you clear them on normal it's done on normal, but when you go to hard, then you have to do those side quests again. On one person mode, most quest (even multiplayer ones) are changed so you can solo them save for a few... And even 4 button doors can be opened by yourself most of the time(even on multiplayer mode). This server has some great QoL changes on it that way :)
