"Dr. Osto's Research" Quest Unwinnable??

Hi guys! Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place for this thread. I think it's super cool that communities around this game still exist, so I thought I would ask the experts about the current problem I've having.

So I've been playing through PSO Version 2 on Dreamcast via a burnt CD (in offline mode). It's my first time ever playing the game, and it's been a blast! I'm nearly level 30 and trying to make my way through the Ruins for the first time. While I was in there, I got a monster's arm, and found out about a questline that will let me convert it into a weapon. Sounds awesome, but I've run into a tricky problem...

Whenever I start the quest "Dr. Osto's Research," it lets me get about 3-4 rooms into it before I have to fight an NPC character. Once I beat him and he says his dialogue, the game hangs on a black screen, rendering the quest un-finishable. I wondered if it was to do with playing on a burnt copy, but the game has functioned 100% like normal up until this point. Does anyone know of a workaround for this? I really wanted to get at least one cool weapon during my first playthrough, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
