Planned to take a peek for nostalgia, got hooked instead.

Hi everyone!
I very much enjoyed the Gamecube version back when it came out. Just last week I was informed of this server's existence and, foolishly, I decided to give it a try for nostalgia's sake. I am now well and truly addicted, so I figured I might as well post here to introduce myself.

Also, four questions I don't recall having when I previously played the game:
  • I'm playing a HUcaseal with a Saber and Sword at the moment. I've noticed the second attack of my combos has much less downtime than the third. In a situation where my enemy is vulnerable (for example, the Dragon falls over and I'm hitting its head), will I do more damage spamming three-hit combos or two-hit combos?
  • Can I access the (very minimal) "story mode" that was in the Gamecube version? I remember speaking to the principal at the very beginning of the game, but his office is empty whenever I visit him on Ephinea.
  • Can I swap the top palette buttons? My right bumper isn't as reliable as it used to be, so I'd much rather have the inventory shortcut on Y and the chat shortcut on RB+Y.
  • How do I access the dressing room mentioned on the website? My character turned out a lot shorter than I expected. Not a huge deal, but something I'd like to fix if I could.
Thanks for taking the type to read my nonsense! Hope to see you all online!

Welcome to the server! Happy to see another nostalgia victim. :D As far as your questions go:
  • I think it'd still be more with the three-hit combos, but I'm not sure.
  • If you make a room in Solo Mode, you should be able to access some story mode missions from the Hunter's Guild. Otherwise, I believe you could make a normal room and access the gov't quests from the Principal where he should be.
  • Not sure.
  • Once you join a team, you can access the dressing room from the character select screen (if they have it unlocked).

*POUNCES and examines Juruk-san closely* Hmmmm.... let's see.... First.... Wonderful to see an old vet heeding the battle cry of Nostalgia! Never played HUcassies before...but Have noticed that slight pause in their attack kata. Going to assume you're making a mountain out of a mole hill with the 2 attack VS 3 with a common saber/sword. Your best bet is to get your paws on a double saber type and watch the HUcasseal unique attack pattern REALLY wake up! >=3
From what mew remembers is if you're hankering for the original story mode quests we had on the consoles...When you create a room in single player mode...you get access to "Side Story" at the guild counter. Think you initially get like 4 annoying basic crap quests...but once those are out of the way...the grand list of neat quests will open up...."Seek my master"..."Dr Osto's Reasearch"..."waterfall tears"..."the unsealed door" ...etc etc. As for your pallet buttons...guess it depends on your game pad purrference...LOT of XBOX360 Pad users here...XBOXONE...PS4 and XBONE Pads too...so not sure what you're asking.
Ahhh the ol' Dressing room. You might remember from the old days we had immediate access to this if we logged on with $10,000 in our characters pockets. SONIC TEAM had originally planned on forcing us to be social and 'team' oriented with either friends or strangers around the world and had put "Team" options in the game...Welllll, that kinda got sidetracked after release and they threw their hands in the air cursing and decided to just GIVE it to us...Now in order to get access to your dressing room...one needs to join an actual "Team" that has 'unlocked' the dressing room with 'team points'. You might have noticed the funky symbols and colorful shapes next to players names out in the lobby? Those are Team Flags. Once you have joined a team, certain team points are earned by sacrificing rares you find in the team menu. Most low tier rares are 1 point....others 10...and 50. Sooo your best bet is to join a team that already has Dressing room unlockededed! =3 Theres a Teams thread section here on the forums if youre looking to ask to join <3
Hope some of mew's ramblings halped....oh...BTW..... Welcome Home! =3

Jeebus... mew needs to short paw her writing! lol WTG Fro Fro! <3!

Thanks for the detailed replies!
I'm sure the two/three hit combo thing is probably of little to no consequence damage-wise, but it haunts me with every three-hit combo I throw out. But I'll definitely keep an eye out for double sabers! I remember being a huge fan of them back in the day.

I'll take a better look at the quests. There's a lot of different categories, so I was kind of intimidated and I ended up ignoring them. I know some of them are good for experience or item drops, but are there any that unlock important features or items for completing them? They seem like they all reward meseta.

I'd assumed the dressing room was a feature introduced with private servers; I never played the Gamecube version online. Good to know I'll have the option available to me, but for now I want to stick with solo play.

You're on the right track...But one scary thing about quests is...Some ARE mission critical if for example you want to convert Enemy parts into weapons. I.E. "Dr Ostos Research". BUUUT, there's a SPECIFIC way to go about doing it in sequence...or eles Dr Monty will only ask "Where's Elenor?" instead of noticing you has Quality enemy parts in your pockets to convert. https://www.pioneer2.net/community/threads/how-to-convert-enemy-parts-to-weapons-and-add-hit.362/ GL! Stay SANE! <3

Welcome to ephinea!
To answer some of your questions: @Afro__Joe answered 2 questions so I'll try to answer the rest.

  • It depends how you are comboing, what enemy you are fighting & what weapons you are using but generally using a 2-combo over a 3rd will be more DPS due to slow animation cooldowns. With a saber or sword on the boss in this situation you mentioned, I would HH & speed up recovery (mentioned below) > reset. Assuming you have the accuracy to hit the 1st H on the boss. Also using 2 hit combos instead of 3 on general enemies can help prevent getting knockdown/hit by the enemy. Using a 3rd combo is usually only recommended if you can Ck them or if you can avoid getting hit still (depends on weapon/class animation). After using part of the combo you'd then use the menu to avoid slowdown for being close and backway to dodge their attack, then go back in for your next combo. You can also flick your pallete (assuming no attacks on the back) or bring up & cancel your symbol chats quickly in-between combo s which speed up the recovery time.

  • Yes, you can change your controls in-game: F12 (Main menu) > Options > Pad button config

You can also change all the pallete controls by going into the customize tab and while on the action tab selecting what you want. If you enter the tech area you can press the numbers to coordinate to the pallete here. May have to turn on gaming keyboard (can't remember the exact name, something like that; will check after I log on) toggle in the options for this to work. There is also a program called palette manager from Tofumans Tools which allows a second whole pallete row so that's nice to play around with to extra techs, items for quick use etc.

Thanks, good to have some clarification on that combo thing. I've mostly been sticking with two-hit combos since they're safer, but thanks for bringing up the menu for cancelling the movement slowdown! I completely forgot about that little trick. The backside of my palette is free of attacks, so I'll probably use that.

Thanks for reminding me about the controls. I'll probably end up setting the action palette swap button to something else, but I'd prefer it if I could just swap the positions of the two top palette actions, chat shortcuts and inventory shortcut. Judging from Tofuman's palette selector, I'm starting to think it's simply not possible.
