Unresponsive, laggy, controller issue

I been having some serious controller issues lately, having to press buttons repeatedly to get them to respond, or lag, and sometimes it just stops working requiring an unplug replug.
This happens to both a ps4 dual shock 4, as well as an xbox one controller
I been playing since the end of June, with no issues up until recently, any ideas?

Using an Alienware 14, running windows 8.1

i'm not an expert, but just for some variable elimination:

- did it just suddenly start happening, equally to both controllers?
- is there ANY way both controllers have just been loved to death?
- did anything change about your system/way you connect/mapping software at all?
- did you cats munch on the cords?

Yea just started happening, the xbox controller starts vibrating before it goes unresponsive.
Windows updated, recently, not sure if it's that, I just plug & play no software, I have multiple USB cords, happens with all of them.
Doing a System restore, & hoping for the best
