Unable to type in character name

Hey, I'm new here. I just created my account today. I downloaded the game and started creating my character but it won't let me type in a name. I select the character name button and the cursor appears in the text field but typing does nothing. I pressed every button on my controller and the only thing I can do is go back.
 
I read the FAQ about IME but I have IME disabled and I can type my account and password just not character name.
I found a really awkward workaround. I noticed that I can type if I set windows IME to Japanese even when IME is disabled in the launcher. So I changed the keyboard to alphanumeric and used the on-screen keyboard to type.
