Things that influenced PSO

Post anything you believe might've influenced any aspect of PSO, from its music to weapon names or bosses, peculiar etymology, gameplay mechanics, etc no matter how trivial. You might know a little-known song that influenced the OST or an old video game boss that resembles one of PSO's. You might even be a Gae Bolg punmaster who can tell us what "Lavis" actually means or why the developers suddenly went French in Episode 4. Below are three things I came across:

PSO's character create music from the song at 11:50 on French project A Reminiscent Drive's 1997 album

Angry Fist from the Japanese punk rock band's 1997 album.

I think something that you'll find to be somewhat commonplace, at least in Sega developed quests for single player mode, is that the way that monsters spawn in the area do seem to be lore friendly to an extent. You would not expect Altered Beasts to spawn in a formulaic way around the Caves, in a similar sense, you would actually expect Machine type monsters from the Mines to spawn in formulaic patterns (which they do), which at least to me seems pretty lore accurate.

Just something to think about the next time you're playing a quest or thinking about making your own; sometimes the way in which an enemy spawns is more important than which enemy or how many. This rule starts to fall apart pretty badly when you take the multiplayer quests into consideration where Sega pretty deliberately made a lot of quests have monsters spawn in large groups (looking at you Lost X quest series), but for single player it really does seem like they were thinking about how the enemy spawns more than how many or which kind specifically.

Another thing I'll say is that I really appreciated their commitment to their prior releases when making PSO, they could have very obviously never included anything from prior releases into the game, but they did. Making things like Robochao or Striker of Chao or a Puyo Puyo Mag, or even making joke weapons like Game Magazine. Sometimes, despite them usually just being collectors items, a game as big and sprawling as PSO really needs these joke collectors items to really complete itself.

Finally, I really like how the majority of Episode 2 seems to have taken very heavy inspiration from tropical environments, CCA especially with Mountain, Seaside, and Jungle area, as well even as areas such as Temple. They definitely seemed to really enjoy that tropical environment vibe and I 100% couldn't agree more with it; especially after Episode 1 where everything felt so alien (apart from Forest), it was really nice to see areas that resembled stuff that hit a little bit closer to home in the art department.

W game Sega.

I just wanted to say, thank you for introducing me to A Reminiscent Drive. What beautiful music! Despite playing this game off and on for over 20 years, I had never known this about the character creator music. My mind is blown.
