PSOBBX Server

Welcome one and all to PSOBBX.

This server is the result of a ton of hard work from many helpful people in the PSO community. Every aspect of the game has been looked over very carefully. Changes have been made to take away some of the useless grinding that Sega gave the game while still retaining the original difficulty and feel, The game is not vanilla, nor is that the intention. The intention is to have as much fun in the game as possible. Drop-rates are no longer 1/299,999 for hard items. In fact the drops should seem fair without being too easy. The added items allow game-play changes to create class balance without modifying enemy or player stats. For those eager to hunt their own gear and want to build a collection of all items without cheating, this server is for you.

I look forward to building this community into a fun exciting environment.

Much love goes out to the Tethealla staff, without them this would not be at all possible.

You have no idea how happy it makes me for someone to notice that. For the past 3 weeks I have been working on all 4800 drops (yes there are that many). I took a look at the drops all at once, did comparisons by item, by id, by difficulty. I found patterns and kept with Sega's standards for decent drop-rates. there should be no drops under 0.1% (which is 1/1000~) My drop-list is with DAR(drop anything rate) calculated. Challenge mode drops have not been edited as there is no c-mode support until the next version of Tethealla is released. Work is planned for the PT file and box drops as well to revitalize some of the core mechanics. The PT file edits will be very interesting. That file determines how often a four-slot frame appears vs a no-slot frame, it determines what levels of techniques can appear based on difficulty and ID, how much messeta can drop from boxes or monsters, and other aspects of non red-box items in the game.

I decided to take the server down due to a lack of outside interest in the project. It now sits in a big zip folder in case enough people are interested in me re-launching the server. Over the past few months the player count has been 0 quite a bit. I don't have a bunch of posts saying "hey can you change this" or "hey I don't like this". Its just dead. I ran the server out of pocket, and its not worth the electricity for 1 person to play an hour a week. The goal was and always has been to give people a fun place to play a game I have loved for years. The people that want to have fun are having it wherever they are, but its not at psobbx. Which is fine, but if my server is needed again let me know and assuming enough people care ill pop it back online.

I personally believe the issue here is that while you have the best of intentions, the PSO community is just simply not large enough anymore to warrant a large selection of private servers for different experiences.

Everyone has their wonderful and great ideas as to what would make PSO entertaining and fresh in 2016, but the truth is that above all, any PSO players don't actually care too much about what a server offers, but rather if the server has a population. While a "fun" server sounds great, it's not going to pick up any steam if people are busy playing PSO elsewhere, with their friends, with the majority of the community that's still playing, and with their characters that they can't use on other servers. Nobody likes to play this game in a ghost town, regardless of what a server offers to the player, and nobody likes to start again regardless of how easy you make it to get back up to speed.

In my opinion, while Ephinea is a great server that offers a unique experience on PSO, the only reason it ended up picking up so much steam was because of another server (SCHTServ) dying, meaning a lot of players had to start over again anyway and they had nowhere to play that they liked. Otherwise, while the experience is very cool and the work the developers put into it is nothing short of amazing, a lot wouldn't have moved over because people simply don't like starting over without their friends and everyone else that's around on another server.

These days, I feel if you truly care about the PSO community and want to offer them the best PSO experience, the best thing to do would be to redirect them to one of the currently existing PSOBB servers (assuming they're wanting to play BB in the first place) to play with everyone else, instead of wanting to people play separately on another server. This is why Crono114 putting up SCHTServ again was a mistake. If he truly cared about the community as he allegedly says, he would have kept the server down to keep players together, not separate them.

IDK about anyone else, but I prefer Ephinea over SCHTSERV and Ultima because it feels more, IDK, professional? Ultima's site has grammatical flaws and increased rates, schtserv is schtserv lol

matt i fully agree and thats the reason i took it down, but within the past year ive seen it surge close to 400 players, i had assumed the game was reviving itself. however it has since died down. also i was assuming a somewhat split playerbase would encourage further development and innovation.

Maybe you could try building a player base from somewhere else or from scratch, rather than recycling old server playerbases.

It does, as can be recently seen between the 3 "big" servers of PSO, but the question is at what point the will people be satisfied with "enough" people, so to speak. There's also a difference between each server managing a few hundred each, and managing tens. It's hard to get somewhere off the ground if only a hundred or two people are still playing a game actively (against say, WoW or FlyFF servers which have tens of thousands easily).

Also the 400s was just from one guy (max_dood) streaming on Ultima, so there was renewed hype in the game for a short while, but he hasn't done that recently and people probably moved on again.
