Introduction
HUnewearl, the… faux-foney? Last time NMU3 was on the RBR, I was surprised by a HUnewearl in a FO+DP party. I mused at their quirky choice ofTotoro Leaf Plantain Leaf and Rafoie Merge, eschewing the use of melee attacks. This planted a seed in my head to try it sometime.
Tl;dr: HUnewearl invested in spamming techniques can do damage comparable to androids spamming Divine Punishment.
…and while that won't win any awards, I found it interesting.
Potential Use
If you're already familiar with the merits of FO+DP, feel free to skip this part.
Generally, I would still use a weapon like Last Swan or sacrificial mechs on smaller spawns of Zu, Astark, and probably Goran Detonator.
On Dorphon and Girtabulu, I typically use Slicer of Fanatic or another HP cut weapon, though Anguish lowers the likelihood these will proc.
The Data
For comparison, the following tables in spoiler tags list the time (in seconds) that it takes to knockout (TTK) enemies in Episode 4.
These values are for online/multimode.
TTK for Rangers is calculated by counting the number of Divine Punishment strikes needed to knockout an enemy, assuming max MST for each class. This number is divided by 3 (a full combo), then multiplied by 2 (61-63 frames for a S-S-S combo with V101) and rounded up.
See Divine Punishment and Game mechanics/Frame data for more.
TTK for Forces (including our faux FO, HUnewearl) is calculated by counting the number of casts needed to knockout an enemy, assuming max MST and technique level, casting the Ra series tech an enemy has the lowest resistance to. This number is listed directly (30-31 frames for techniques with V801). Boosts are applied assuming the matching Ra series merge is equipped. Where applicable, Psycho Wand, Ignition (but not Tempest or Congeal) Cloak, and innate (FOnewm's) bonuses are also factored in.
See Technique damage formula and Game mechanics/Frame data (Techniques) for more.
Normal techniques like Gifoie and Gizonde could be boosted with Rika's Claw and a matching Gi series merge, but wasn't a focus for the tables above.
For waves of enemies that spawn without invincibility frames, stacking Gifoie could be worthwhile.
Likewise, the longer range and shorter cast time of Gizonde might also be of interest.
Materials and Mags
Like our FOnewearl inspo, HUnewearl only gets 150 mats and they go quick, so we'll also consider two Mags.
HUnewearl's max MST is 1177, but 1170 is actually the breakpoint to hit all (Desert Yowie) of our best TTK values above.
1170 MST is achieved with Clio. The next highest MST boosting option is Flower Cane. Remember that Excalibur boosts MST as well.

Thanks to Ephinea staff for everything, but especially the damage cancel patch and letting HUnewearl hold Clio.

Because Episode 4 has many enemies with low resistances to fire and light, it's popular for an entire party to focus on attacking with techniques or Divine Punishment. Several enemies also disincentivize the use of conventional ranged attacks, limiting the effectiveness of weapons that are otherwise very strong elsewhere. With good rare item hunts, large waves providing high experience yield, and a smaller RBR quest pool, it's not uncommon to find many FO+DP games (including on Anguish mode) when all of the weekly boosts line up.
In group play like this, it's usually more beneficial to contribute to the damage everyone is doing to all of the enemies together, rather than to go off and melee just a few of them. HUnewearl's level 20 techniques, while having less range and potency, do have the same cast speed as those at level 30. This helps to repeatedly stagger enemies, another feature of this playstyle that can trivialize harder content where other forms of crowd control have reduced duration.

Materials and Mags
Like our FOnewearl inspo, HUnewearl only gets 150 mats and they go quick, so we'll also consider two Mags.
- For the first, see the HUnewearl/Guide section for plans without V101. 115 power and 35 luck materials, and 5/92/103/0 for the Mag. This allows for max ATP, ATA, and Luck (with Red Ring) without units. Wearing BOVN, you get maximum flexibility for units.
- The second plan is more niche, but what makes fauxney shine. Using the same mat counts, we opt for a Mag with 6/76/23/95. With V801 and two Adepts, you still get max ATP, ATA, Luck and now, critically, 1100 MST. All without Red Ring to use technique merges instead.
HUnewearl's max MST is 1177, but 1170 is actually the breakpoint to hit all (Desert Yowie) of our best TTK values above.
HUnewearl's best Ra tech TTK and MST required to achieve it.
Goran (13) | 1148 MST |
Boota (10) | 1116 MST |
Ba Boota (11) | 1094 MST |
Satellite Lizard (Desert) (14) | 1092 MST |
Sand Rappy (Crater) (10) | 1090 MST |
Pyro Goran (14) | 1078 MST |

You may have noticed 1 extra DEF point allocated to our second Mag.
Yep, PSO is an RPG and I made up a weird character backstory. I love Sato. The first Mag is Sato. But with the stats outlined in the second Mag, Sato just not possible.
There is, however, another female FO only Mag: Bhima.
So my headcanon here is that my HUnewearl got this Mag from awitch a female FO. This means Leilla as a Photon Blast, because a FO raising a Mag would get Vritra. And Estlla is also good for Episode 4 bosses. Hence Namuci. And while the consensus is that a 5 DEF Namuci isn't possible, one with 6 is (if you carefully mix feeding Antiparalysis with Trifluids in the right order). So that's where the single spare stat point for my mag/mat plan goes. DEF + MIND = POW + DEX formula is satisfied, the second stat plan still achieves all of its goals with my preferred Photon Blasts, and my HUnewearl gets her witchy Mags.
