Controller help

Hey all. I'm hoping to get some help regarding with controller.
I'm using the PS5 controller for the game. Whenever the mouse pointer is in PSO every action I hit with the controller is duplicated, making the game unplayable. Whenever I move the pointer off the screen to my second monitor, the game is fine but every button I hit in the game takes actions on my computer at that point making the game still unplayable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use JoyToKey.

Per my conversation with @Ryan having 1 input for 1 thing is fine. Having 1 input for multiple things is not fine.

This is my relative setup.

D Pad up 1
D Pad Right 2
D Pad Down 3
D Pad Left 4
L3 5
R3 6
Button 12 R CTRL
Stick Up Up arrow
Stick Down Down arrow

You can't do a dual input such as CTRL+End for the R button on your controller.

When you load the game you do need your controller on first. Then change some basic settings in the controller menu to feel a little more comfortable first. Then use JoyToKey to do something similar like I have done.

Also the mapping system of a PS5 controller may not be applicable on this game. You may need to keep the mouse off screen.

I will use this thread to post about my PS5 controller, as this is the only connection I found about a PS5 controller and PSO BB

Pretty much tried for many many hours to get this to work...

I always have a new problem if one little thing works.

Either Triggers don't work, the cam doesn't work or the game crashes and so on.

100% more crashing with the Steam overlay turned on. If turned off, you can't use the layouts with the radial menus.

With Joy2Key, I can't get other configurations to work so that it only reads the keyboard.. It will still constantly use the normal buttons from the first joystick configuration.


Do I need a specific joystick to make it simple? I use a PS5 controller, but I would use another joystick only to play PSO without doing all this stuff.


I already spent a couple of days installing the add-ons, which caused a lot of crashes and confusion. I sorted that..


The game is fun without all the stuff until you get to Ultimate, but I feel like I am missing out on important QoL stuff.

Switching to the keyboard from the controller is super annoying, as I usually sit back in the chair with the controller.

I also have used PS controllers on PC since DS3.. which I still own... somewhere.. in a box. Also got DS4, but I guess DS5 and 4 have some weird issues with the game.

After a very long night, I succeeded..

After rebinding all controllers and really trying anything, I just had to go back and use Steam again... I crashed constantly... until I tried out different launcher options before launching from Steam again.

The controller options did not help (analog setting, DirecXInput etc)
...switching to a different controller did not work.
Even using the keyboard started the drifting.

So I went through nearly every possible launcher option..

and..


As soon as I changed the API to DirectX8 or 9, it seemed to work (played 4 hours.. was tired.. it was 4am)

I am using foreverdank's PSO BB steam layout as a base to adjust to my own setup.


No idea if this player is active here, but huge thanks to him for saving me A LOT of time in the end!

Would love to know if that works for other people and if I should give back to the community and make a simple guide.

(I saw one example of a person on Reddit just a few months ago giving up on the game because they couldn't figure it out).
