How do /you/ control this game personally?

Re: How do you control this game?

supposedly people have been using that gamecube to wiiu controller adapter on pc with xpadder

i was thinkin of getting it but im partial to 360 controller now after so many years

also gc controller shoulder buttons suck ass

Re: How do you control this game?

It's also missing way too many buttons to be used properly with absolutely any other games.

Re: How do you control this game?

Gamecube controller is trash compared to what's out there now. Even back then i preferred the DC controller to GC. Original Duke controller was godly and i loved it for xbox pso.

Re: How do you control this game?

All it's good for these days is Smash Bros. I still like it for what it was though and I couldn't imagine playing my Gamecube and even some Wii games without it, but it really can't hold up to modern controllers.

Sony and Microsoft have only had to make minor changes or add misc features to their controllers every generation while leaving most of their general design alone for good reason. Even the Wii U Pro Controller took notes from the 360 controller and merged a SNES controller with it, it's incredibly similar in design just with swapped button and stick placement.

Re: How do you control this game?

Yep, Star Ocean 3 used pressive sensitivity on the PS2 controller. I had no idea -- I had to use a guide to get past that particular part.

Re: How do you control this game?

Well that's why I said durability. even I cant use it for PSO, like Zero said it's missing too many dang buttons. :S I was actually thinking on getting WiiU PRO adapter for use on PC since I have 2 WiiU pro controllers already, they're really comfy imo.

There's also Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3.
Just lightly press the button to hold up the weapon without firing it.
Press it hard to just shoot it.

I have no idea how the Xbox version handled this.

Re: How do you control this game?

I never found the number bar on BB to be useful, since you couldn't map it to a controller without an external program, and you'd have to either map multiple buttons at once or have a Jaguar controller to have enough buttons to map everything. If Sega had really wanted to fix PSO's action problem, they would have added more shift keys and palettes, but sadly they didn't focus much on controller compatibility with BB and only improved the keyboard controls.

Re: How do you control this game?

Sure, I could remap my buttons on the fly if I had a trainer that would modify the game's memory, but I don't, since Tofu doesn't have time to write them for every version. ;)

Good lord might as well map PSO to an Atari 2600 Joystick at that point and call it a day.

Right now I'm using they keyboard though controlling your pc (player character) can be tedious at times. I might switch to my madkatz gamepad later on to see if that helps.

I have a PS3-style gamepad, but I just tried to use it with this game and it's wack. I can't figure out how to remap the controls (or just the inputs from the gamepad), so currently there are some oddities:

1. You open the menu by clicking either joystick.
2. The left stick controls movement like it should, but the right stick does nothing unless you push it to the left. In which case it opens symbol chat...
3. Because of this it's impossible to actually navigate the inventory.

So for now I'm keyboard all the way until I can be bothered to get a different gamepad. I really don't have any issues with it other than swapping the control palette is kind of annoying. I think I'd rather it be Shift than Ctrl, but it is what it is.

And now that I've typed that I remembered there's a second Ctrl key next to the arrow keys. Perhaps I am not a smart man...

Have you tried pressing the digital d-pad to navigate the inventory?

Also, if you go to the menu with F12, then Options, you should be able to change your pad buttons.

Not sure how much you can customize with a PS3 controller, though, or how much of the input PSO reads from it.

I wonder if you could use something like Joy2Key to get around some limitations?

I also use a PS3 controller with ScpServer (mimics Xinput) and I have no issues at all. Just make sure you configure the controller like Soda said. Just can't use the triggers unfortunately, so I used Xpadder to do that for menuing.

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I just gave that a shot, and trying to assign menu navigation to the D-pad just makes my character walk around, and the right stick is totally screwy. The gamepad I have is super bootleg though (I stole it from a housemate in Japan after he left the country instead of cleaning up his room when we were leaving), so I should probably just get a new one that isn't bass ackwards.
